Artist Profile

Nicolas Moreton

Nicolas Moreton MRSS was born in Watford and studied at the Nene College of Art and Design in Northampton, then at Wolverhampton Polytechnic graduating in 1985.

Nicolas works in a traditional manner, believing that while it is physically demanding, it is only the intimate connection between stone and hand tools that can create an object with its own intrinsic personality.

In 2021-2022 Nicolas had a major retrospective exhibition in the Cloisters and Ante-Chapel of New College, Oxford.  His solo shows include ‘Passages’ at Longleat; ‘Sense of Stone’ at Hunt Jennings Gallery, London; ‘Touch Stones’ at Hutson Gallery, London, ‘Towards Totality’ at David Messum Fine Art, London and regularly at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. In 2006 he had a national touring show around English cathedrals including Gloucester, Lincoln and Manchester.

He was elected a member of the Royal British Society of Sculptors in 1995 and his work is in collections internationally as well as notable collections in the UK, including at Burghley and Longleat.

‘Nicolas Moreton is a modern master of the medium of stone carving’ – Tim Marlow, art critic
