Artist Profile

Gopali Mulji

Gopali was encouraged at an early age to use creativity as a form of language, a way of communicating ideas and recording memories. Travels in India, where her father was from, allowed her interest in colour and decorative abstraction to develop. After studying English Literature at Oxford, she met her Sudanese husband whilst travelling in Africa and her passion for painting and drawing resurfaced. She went on to gain an MA at SOAS in Islamic and African Art which gave rise to a phase of fabric painting and embroidered abstract wall pieces.

Textiles became a business partnership in London, taking her into fashion and interiors whereupon she continued travelling back and forth to India exploring the great craftsmanship of the land. Now settled in Wiltshire her relationship with the natural world and painting offers her spiritual relief and fulfilment.

She is fascinated by the magical aspect of painting – the way a piece takes on a life of its own: in its planning; execution; or the way it is received by the viewer which becomes part of the adventure, part of the process and the joy.
